How to identify a hard disk failure?

When a hard disk fails it can be identified from the following ways:

  1. BIOS will not recognize or access hard disk
  2. Hard disk makes clicking noise.
  3. Hard disk restarts on its own.
  4. Hard disk shows a boot failure, and asks for the boot records to be updated.
  5. Hard disks become dead silent.
